Meet Dr. Alam
Dr. Syed Alam is a board-certified psychiatrist whose career in medicine began in Bangladesh after completing his MD. Early in his work, he cared for many patients with cancer and witnessed firsthand the deep emotional suffering experienced not only by patients but also by their families. These experiences sparked his commitment to understanding the psychological dimensions of illness and the vital importance of accessible, compassionate mental health care.
Dr. Alam went on to earn a PhD in Molecular Biology from the Graduate School of Medicine at Gifu University in Japan, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He later completed his residency in Psychiatry at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and pursued fellowship training in Clinical Neurobiology and Major Psychosis.
Dr. Alam has extensive clinical experience treating adolescents and adults with a wide range of conditions, including mood and thought disorders, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, personality disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. He is deeply interested in cultural psychiatry and places strong emphasis on understanding how cultural identity, immigration, family dynamics, and community factors shape emotional well-being. He is also dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ individuals and recognizes the unique stressors and barriers that can impact their mental health.
Dr. Alam practices a whole-person, patient-centered approach to care. He prioritizes empathy, active listening, psychotherapy, and the careful use of medication when needed. His goal is to work collaboratively with each patient to foster healing, resilience, and meaningful improvement in daily life.
